Can You Beat the Tar Golem?

Yes — and it matters. The fight is scripted to continue the story whether you win or lose (the same cutscene plays either way), but only an actual kill unlocks the “Finish the Fight” achievement. If you die to it, that unlock is missed for the run.

Before You Enter

• Clear Disciple’s Grotto and confirm its beacon is cleansed — it is the checkpoint that covers the encounter route.
• Make sure you have Harros (your first Shell). Fighting the Golem Shell-less is a two-hit death sentence.

The Fight

The Golem is a big, slow opener designed to test hardening: its wind-ups are long and its hits are survivable through a well-timed harden. Trade in short strings, harden through the swing you cannot avoid, and back out when it commits to slam sequences. There is no rush — the arena has room to reset.

After the Kill

Push on and pick up the Ovum to unlock Marrowkeep (“Reach Marrowkeep”), then continue the route in the open-beta walkthrough. Next major fight: Magdalena.
